Democrat governors across the nation are starting to face immense backlash for unnecessarily strict stay-at-home orders in the wake of coronavirus. As the threat of COVID-19 runs its course, Americans are facing a greater threat — the ushering in of authoritarianism during a crisis.

Last week, residents of Ohio banned together in protest and demanded their governor to lift lockdown mandates. Now, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer is facing similar treatment. A petition via Change.org currently exists to urge the impeachment of Whitmer and has accumulated nearly 150,000 signatures.

Michiganders aren’t playing around. Whitmer’s actions following coronavirus have incensed the residents of her state, as have her broken promises and poor policies.

The Push to Get Whitmer Out of Office

Since coronavirus, Whitmer, like many other governors, has ordered the people within her state to stay home. This practice is currently marketed as a tool to halt the spread of coronavirus by removing access to potential carriers. However, the finer print of Whitmer’s Stay Home, Stay Safe order is more strict than it needs to be.

The Michigan governor is prohibiting state residents from fishing in boats, traveling to vacation homes and visiting the homes of loved ones among other things; to add insult to injury, Whitmer has also banned Michiganders from buying so-called “non-essential” items in stores.

Michigan residents are sick of it. The petition to remove Whitmer from office slams her coronavirus response as “further promoting the pandemic” and “causing more Michiganders to get sick.” Moreover, the petition censures Whitmer for failing to fix Michigan’s roads as she promised.

Resisting Authoritarian COVID-19 Responses

Gretchen Whitmer and other far-left governors across America must understand that coronavirus is not an excuse to trample on the freedoms of Americans. Never letting a good crisis go to waste is in keeping with Democrat ideologies; however, pushback is inevitable.

The tighter that Whitmer and other Democrat governors squeeze, the more people will resist. If the Michigan governor continues on her current course, it won’t be long before Michiganders are taking to the streets like Ohioans and demanding a lift of the lockdown.
