Iran’s Missile Barrage Engulfs U.S. Bases

Iran has launched hundreds of missiles and drones at U.S. military bases and civilian infrastructure across the Gulf region, killing at least 19 people and pulling sovereign Arab nations into a war they never chose to fight.

Story Highlights

  • Iran struck U.S. military bases in Qatar, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain following coordinated U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iranian targets.
  • A drone strike on Kuwait International Airport’s passenger terminal killed one person and injured dozens of civilians.
  • All six Gulf Cooperation Council states have now been hit by Iranian missiles or drones, straining regional stability.
  • U.S. Central Command reported that American and allied defenses intercepted the majority of Iranian attacks across the Gulf.

Iran Brings the Fight to Gulf Neighbors

Following U.S. and Israeli coordinated strikes on Iranian military and leadership targets — an operation that reportedly killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei — Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched a massive retaliatory campaign across the Gulf region. [8] Iranian ballistic missiles and drones targeted Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait, Al Dhafra Air Base in the United Arab Emirates, and installations in Bahrain. [2] The scale of the assault made clear that Iran was striking at American power by hitting the countries hosting U.S. forces.

The strikes represent a deliberate Iranian strategy of targeting U.S. allies who host American military bases rather than focusing exclusively on Israel. Analysts note that out of 2,171 total attacks directed at the Gulf region, 1,138 struck Gulf Cooperation Council territory. [5] Gulf states hosting U.S. bases immediately became targets the moment Operation Epic Fury was launched. [7] These nations did not initiate hostilities — they simply hosted American forces — yet they are absorbing the consequences of a conflict driven by Tehran, Washington, and Jerusalem.

Civilian Sites Take Direct Hits

The most alarming strike hit Kuwait International Airport’s passenger terminal, a civilian facility. A drone attack on the terminal killed one person and injured 63 others. [3] The European Union condemned Iran’s deliberate targeting of civilian sites and infrastructure, including hotels and airports. The strikes were not precision military operations aimed solely at U.S. forces — they spread damage across civilian life in sovereign Arab nations that had no role in initiating the conflict.

All six Gulf Cooperation Council states — Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Jordan — have now been struck by Iranian missiles or drones. [6] Saudi Arabia confirmed Iran carried out attacks on the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Qatar, and Jordan. [1] This breadth of targeting signals that Iran is willing to destabilize an entire region to retaliate against the United States, regardless of the sovereignty or neutrality of the nations in between.

U.S. Defenses Hold, But the Pressure Mounts

U.S. Central Command reported that American and allied missile defense systems intercepted the vast majority of Iranian attacks across the Gulf. Despite the volume of missiles and drones launched, Iran’s strikes largely failed to achieve their military objectives against U.S. installations. In response, U.S. forces conducted retaliatory strikes, including a Hellfire missile strike that disabled an Iranian tanker in the region. The military exchange underscores how quickly the conflict is escalating beyond any original scope.

Gulf states, caught in the crossfire, have publicly urged de-escalation while hardening their rhetoric against Iran as attacks intensified. [10] By choosing not to retaliate directly against Iran, Gulf governments have deliberately avoided giving Tehran additional legal or political justification for continued strikes. [9] Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi framed the attacks as “defensive strikes” against sites the U.S. is using to conduct operations — a claim that does nothing to restore the lives lost or the civilian infrastructure destroyed across the region. The cease-fire, already fragile, is being shredded one missile barrage at a time.
