Madison Metropolitan School District canceled all classes and after-school programs on May 1 after 70 percent of teachers signed pledges to skip work and join anti-ICE protests, forcing district officials to close schools due to safety concerns over inadequate staffing and supervision.
District Announces Closure Due to Teacher Activism
District officials sent a message to parents explaining that Madison Teachers Inc., the union representing educators, collected signatures from 70 percent of staff supporting participation in “A Day Without Immigrants” as part of the May Day Strong national day of action. The district determined that anticipated staff absences would create unsafe conditions due to insufficient supervision and educational support. School will resume Monday, May 4, with students not required to make up the missed instructional time despite meeting state Department of Public Instruction requirements.
Union Encourages Mass Walkout
Madison Teachers Inc. actively promoted participation in the demonstration, joining Voces de la Frontera and other labor organizations. The union announced a march starting at noon at the State Street Library Mall, proceeding to the Capitol at 2 PM to hear from impacted communities and activists. Union leadership called for “No School, No Work, and No Shopping,” stating that members would align with demands from immigrant communities while highlighting the state’s failure to fulfill obligations to public school students.
Parents Scramble for Childcare Solutions
The sudden closure sparked immediate criticism from parents who must now arrange childcare or take time off work. The decision means families lose a full day of education while teachers participate in political activism rather than fulfilling their professional responsibilities. All events and athletics will continue as scheduled despite the classroom cancellations, creating additional confusion for families trying to navigate the disrupted schedule.
What This Means
The Madison school closure represents a collision between teacher union activism and parental expectations for consistent education. While the district frames the decision as a safety measure, critics argue that allowing mass teacher absences for political protests sets a troubling precedent. The situation raises questions about whether educators should leverage their positions to force school closures for activist causes, leaving working families to manage unexpected childcare challenges while students miss classroom instruction.

All the teachers should be fined. They are supposed to be teaching school room classes, not activism. They can do that on Saturday or Sunday. These people are so ignorant.
TELL YOU WHAT! KEEP THE SCHOOLS CLOSED AND TERMINATE THE TEACHERS!!! LET THE PARENT DEVELOP THEIR OWN SCHOOLS OR DO HOME SCHOOLING!!! THE CHILDREN WOULD BE BETTER EDUCATED AND BETTER FUTURE CITIZENS!!!
These teachers should be fined, receive no pay for the days they did not show up for work and fired if they repeat the performance. Its time the taxpayers woke up and payed attention to the BS that’s going on in this nation. They were hired to educate the students in accordance with national standards, not political crap.
FIRE THOSE TEACHERS! THEY WERE HIRED, AND SIGNED A CONTRACT TO TEACH! IF THEY WANT TO PARADE THEIR ACTIVISM THEN THEY SHOULD DO IT ON THEIR OWN TIME AND NOT BE PAID WITH TAX DOLLARS!! THEY SHOULD NEVER BE ALLOWED TO TEACH IN ANY SCHOOL IN THE UNITED STATES GOING FORWARD.
FIRE THEM ALL!!!!
This is Treason against the United States and the leaders should be charged accordingly!!!
