North Korea Dares America With New ‘Nuclear’ Destroyer

North Korea’s new “nuclear” destroyer is a fresh warning shot at America and its allies, and a reminder of what happens when Washington goes soft on real threats.

Story Snapshot

  • Kim Jong Un has commissioned the 5,000-ton destroyer Choe Hyon, touted as able to fire nuclear-capable missiles.
  • The ship reportedly carries 74 missile launch cells and has completed more than a year of weapons testing, all claimed by state media.
  • There is still no independent proof that the warship can actually launch nuclear weapons, despite the regime’s bold rhetoric.
  • North Korea plans even larger warships as it deepens ties with Russia and China, challenging U.S. power in the Pacific.

Kim’s New Warship: What Pyongyang Claims It Can Do

North Korea says its new 5,000-ton destroyer, named Choe Hyon, is the centerpiece of a nuclear-armed navy that can strike far beyond the Korean Peninsula.[2] State media reports that the ship carries anti-aircraft and anti-ship weapons, as well as ballistic and cruise missiles that can be fitted with nuclear warheads.[1] Kim Jong Un told a commissioning ceremony at Nampo that arming the navy with nuclear weapons is “progressing as planned,” and framed the destroyer as proof of that claim.[2]

Reports based on North Korean sources say the Choe Hyon has 74 vertical launch system cells to fire different kinds of missiles, including about 20 larger cells believed to be sized for nuclear-capable ballistic missiles.[6] According to those same reports, Kim personally oversaw a series of missile tests from the ship over more than a year, including launches of what the regime called nuclear-capable cruise missiles.[2] North Korea portrays the destroyer as its first surface ship able to deliver a nuclear payload at sea.[3]

The Verification Gap: Bold Talk, Thin Proof

Outside experts caution that almost everything known about the Choe Hyon’s nuclear role comes from North Korea’s own propaganda outlets, not from independent tracking or on-site inspection.[1] Western and Asian analysts say there is still no third-party confirmation that the destroyer has actually fired a nuclear-capable missile or that all of its launch cells work as advertised.[6] Even basic details, like the exact name spelling of the ship in foreign reports, have appeared inconsistent, adding to doubts about the regime’s narrative.[6]

This fits a long-running pattern in North Korea’s weapons program, where big announcements often come years before outside proof of full capability.[18] In the past, the regime has claimed new nuclear advances and then used those claims to pressure the United States and its allies at the bargaining table.[19] Intelligence and research groups note that North Korea now holds dozens of nuclear warheads and continues to expand its missile forces, even as specific claims about new systems are hard to verify from the outside.[20] In short: Kim’s navy is getting more dangerous, but some of his loudest boasts are still unproven.

Why This Matters to American Strength and Security

Kim’s push for a nuclear-armed fleet comes as North Korea deepens military ties with Russia and maintains close links with China, creating a hostile bloc that wants to push the United States out of the Western Pacific.[1] A destroyer that can fire long-range cruise or ballistic missiles from the sea would give Pyongyang more ways to threaten U.S. bases in Japan, Guam, and South Korea, and to pressure key shipping lanes.[7] That matters not only for our troops abroad, but for global trade and energy routes that affect prices back home.

For years, globalist-minded leaders in Washington bet on talks, paper deals, and United Nations resolutions to tame North Korea, even while cutting U.S. defense budgets and chasing climate agendas that weakened American energy and industrial power.[21] Meanwhile, Kim pushed ahead with nuclear tests, long-range missiles, and now a blue-water navy.[22] Conservative security analysts argue this moment proves a basic truth: dictators respect strength, not speeches. A serious response means stronger missile defenses, a rebuilt Navy, tight cooperation with South Korea and Japan, and a clear message that any nuclear attack on our allies or our homeland would meet overwhelming force.
