Christian evangelists in eastern Uganda face deadly persecution as Muslim extremists target faith leaders who successfully convert Muslims to Christianity, leaving families grieving and communities gripped by fear.
Former Muslim Evangelist Ambushed After Dialogue Event
Konkona Kasimu, a 42-year-old former Muslim and New Eden Church evangelist, led a four-day Christian-Muslim dialogue in Busia town from December 8-12. The open-air event attracted significant attention as Kasimu used his expertise in both Bible and Quran texts to engage attendees. Tensions escalated when several Muslims converted to Christianity during the dialogue. On December 12 evening, while motorcycling toward Iganga around 6:30 p.m., four men dressed in Islamic attire ambushed Kasimu and teammate Recheal Kyakuwa in Nakalama swamp. The attackers specifically identified Kasimu before fatally striking him on the head. Kyakuwa survived with injuries and provided testimony from her hospital bed.

Second Evangelist Stabbed With Warning Note Left Behind
David Washume, 38, conducted a three-day preaching campaign in Nalondo, Buwalasi, and Nabumali, utilizing Quran-Bible comparisons to reach Muslim audiences. Several Muslims converted to Christianity during his evangelistic efforts, sparking protests from local Islamic community members. On April 3 around 10 p.m., while traveling home to Nabumali with companion Fred Wepuhulu, attackers ambushed Washume. After discovering Bibles and a Quran in his bag, the assailants stabbed him to death. The perpetrators left a chilling message at the scene: “You, infidel, will meet Allah in judgment.” Police launched a search for suspects but have made no arrests. The targeted nature of the attack underscores the dangers facing evangelists who successfully convert Muslims in eastern Uganda’s rural areas.
Religious Freedom Under Assault in Eastern Uganda
Eastern Uganda’s Busia, Mbale, and Iganga regions have experienced escalating religious tensions where evangelists employing Quran-Bible comparisons face violent backlash from extremists. Christianity dominates Uganda nationally at 84%, yet Islam maintains strong presence at 14% in eastern territories. Morning Star News reports document a pattern of rising violence against converts and evangelists during 2023-2024, including multiple stabbings and ambushes following open-air events. Church leaders describe the killings as targeted persecution, with New Eden Church officials urging prayer and protection for evangelists. The attacks represent a direct assault on religious freedom—a constitutional right that conservatives recognize as fundamental to human dignity and liberty. When governments fail to protect citizens exercising their faith, tyranny fills the vacuum.
Police Response Falls Short as Cases Remain Unsolved
Uganda Police continue investigating both the Kasimu and Washume murders without producing arrests or public statements regarding progress. The lack of enforcement in remote swamp and roadway locations where attackers strike reveals significant capacity limitations. Widespread grief has swept through eastern Christian communities, with many evangelists now sheltering before travel or avoiding Muslim-majority areas entirely. New converts face intimidation as the unresolved cases signal impunity for perpetrators. The attacks have created a chilling effect on open-air evangelism and interfaith dialogues, potentially forcing an exodus of converts who fear similar retaliation. This enforcement failure deepens Christian-Muslim divides while undermining Uganda’s standing on religious freedom protections, which international monitors already classify as high-risk for Christians facing persecution.
